Apple Sweetheart Pie Recipe

Apple Heart Pie

Directions

For a great combination of baking apple; use Granny Smith, Braeburn, Jonagold, Empire, Regent, Spartan, Newtown apples or a mixture of your favorite apples together.

Pan size: 9 inch pie plate
Temp: 375°F degrees
Baking time: 50 to 60 minutes
Servings: 8 to 10

A sweet touch for a loved one.

Basic Pie Crust

2 tablespoons all - purpose flour, plus more for dusting
8 large Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
1 can cherry pie filling or light cherry pie filling
3/4 cup sugar, plus additional for pie top
Zest and juice of 1 lemon
1/2 teaspoon almond flavoring
1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 large egg, beaten
red food coloring
a heart shaped cookie cutter

On a lightly floured surface, roll out pie dough into two 1/8 inch thick circles slightly larger than that of an 9 - inch pie plate. Press one pastry circle into the pie plate. Place the other circle on waxed paper or parchment paper. Cut out 4 hearts with cookie cutter and set with top crust and cover with plastic wrap. Chill pie dough until firm, about 15 minutes. Pre heat oven.

In a large bowl, combine apples, cherry pie filling, sugar, lemon zest, lemon juice, almond flavoring, spices, and flour. Mix well. Spoon apple pie mixture into pie pan. Dot with butter.

Cover with remaining chilled pie crust. Seal by crimping edges. Brush top crust with beaten egg, save about 1 tablespoon for the hearts.

Brush the heart cut outs with the red food coloring. Carefully lay hearts on the top pie crust over lapping 1/2 of the cut out hearts. Brush the remaining egg whites on red hearts.

To make the red sugar; in a small zip lock bag drop a drop of food coloring, 2 tablespoons of sugar and shake. Sprinkle red sugar over hearts and around the crust of the Apple Sweetheart pie.

Bake pie on a cookie sheet for 50 to 65 minutes; or until crust is brown and juices are bubbling. Let Apple Sweetheart pie cool on wire rack before serving.
